Dreamforce Lessons for the Public Sector

Dreamforce Lessons for the Public Sector

The narrative coming out of Dreamforce and most major technology conferences, is centred on agents and digital labour.

And rightly so.

It’s encouraging to see these capabilities move from concept to reality. Demonstrating what’s now possible for government service delivery. While many departments and agencies are still in the early stages of piloting or deploying AI, the keynote provided a compelling glimpse into the near-term future: a world where digital labour operates at scale across government, amplifying human capacity while maintaining the critical guardrails of governance, privacy, security, and trust.

The whole idea in the keynote of accessing services and being guided and augmented by digital labour through, for example, an application process and the ability to converse directly with that system 24 hours a day would be hugely valuable for any citizen. It represents a step change in accessibility across demographics, providing a consistent, responsive, and inclusive experience. Cloudwerx is already advancing this frontier in several government programs, where AI solutions are analysing and digesting complex information to inform assessments, significantly reducing manual workload for employees while improving decision accuracy and turnaround times.

The shift to agents isn’t “AI for AI’s sake.” It’s a licence to re-imagine services end-to-end with citizens and employees at the centre.

The keynote’s most powerful idea wasn’t the tech, it was the operating model: let agents do the swivel-chairing across systems so humans can do the deciding and maximise the time they spend on the highest value work. In an Australian context, that means replacing paper-heavy steps, opaque queues, and fragmented portals with proactive, conversational journeys that support the progression of critical cases or applications for government support.

We’ve seen how this thinking unlocks value in safeguarding programs that handle very large volumes of critical data, exactly the kind of environment where efficiency, trust, and auditability matter most, but more importantly environments where providing time back to public sector staff that they can then dedicate to the most at risk or vulnerable.

Ambition matters. Quick wins are essential, but deferring high-value AI to “Phase 2 or later” is often a missed opportunity. A better pattern is to run tightly scoped, production-grade pilots on impactful use cases from day one.

The pain points we encounter; manual handling, limited self-service, identity-verification friction, and data locked in legacy systems, are precisely where agentic workflows create outsized impact: summarising case evidence, flagging inconsistencies, orchestrating statutory steps, and guiding applicants through multi-stage processes. That’s transformation aligned to outcomes (faster decisions, lower unit cost, stronger safeguards), not just platform uplift.

Leadership and narrative are decisive. Our first project meeting with an executive sponsor (from a non-technical background) began with a simple mandate: “How do we start using AI?” That sponsorship accelerated cadence, unblocked decisions, and kept the message positive and human: these tools multiply people; they don’t replace them. Programs need the same clarity in their story: stop selling “employee enablement” in the abstract and show screen-by-screen how an investigator, assessor, or contact-centre agent’s day gets easier next week.

Pair human-centred design with fast deployment: pilot, measure, then scale. Tie each increment to strategy (safety, service quality, productivity) and be explicit about compliance, data residency, and model choice.

For Australian public sector teams balancing reform, demand, and legacy risk, the keynote’s message resonates: agents change the maths; scale services without scaling cost, if we’re bold, outcome-led, and willing to prove value early on the use cases that matter most.
